In January of 2018 Pennsylvania declared a state of emergency for the heroin and opioid epidemic. This seminar will offer you an opportunity to learn more about this epidemic and how to respond as pastor/church to this crisis. Topics to be addressed: Opioid Crisis: How did we get here? History, Current Use, Trends, Misuse & Addiction, Language and Stigma, Where Is the Hope? Medication and disposal, Indicators in the home, Recovery, Accessing treatment and What is the next step for the faith community?
Angela Cook is a recovery advocate and speaker who volunteers on several community based committees such as Cumberland County’s Substance Abuse and Prevention Coalition and the West Shore Opioid Task Force, and is the Outreach Coordinator for Medard’s House, a faith-based Children’s Community Center in New Cumberland, PA. Most recently, Angela has been overseeing several community-wide rehabilitation efforts by organizing town hall meetings, naloxone trainings, support groups, meeting with lawmakers on local, state, and federal levels, providing education to businesses and churches on stigma and treatment accessibility, and has been at the forefront of West Shore’s taskforce and response team.
