Letter from the Rev. Dr. Quintin L. Robertson, UTI Director
On Tuesday September 18, 2018 we will celebrate the 38th anniversary of the Urban Theological Institute (UTI) of United Lutheran Seminary (ULS) with our annual UTI Lecture & Worship Celebration. Our guest lecturer and preacher this year will be The Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Waller, Senior Pastor of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church.
All proceeds during this celebration will support The Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Endowed Chair in African American Studies at United Lutheran Seminary (ULS). Indeed, we are half way to our goal of $1.5 million. As we continue raising funds for the Wright Chair, we are appealing to our alumni and friends to help us fully endow the Chair and secure the theological education of future men and women who will serve the Black Church. As a supporter of UTI, we request your assistance through both your influence and financial contribution.
We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us for the celebration! An offering will be received at both events to support the Wright Chair. If you are unable to attend, we ask for your prayers and support. Your gift to the Wright Chair will strengthen African American Studies at Unite Lutheran Seminary. Thank you for your dedicated support.

About Reverend Dr. Alyn E. Waller
Reverend Dr. Alyn E. Waller is the Senior Pastor of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A highly sought after revivalist, vocalist, and lecturer, Dr. Waller is a true visionary of church and community who serves humanity far beyond the restraints of traditionalism. Dr. Waller’s partner in ministry and marriage is Dr. Ellyn Jo Waller, the leader of Enon’s Women’s Ministry. They are devoted parents to two adult daughters, Elynn Morgan and Eryka Lynn.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Waller was born on April 8, 1964 to the late Reverend Dr. Alfred M. Waller, Sr. and Mrs. Belva J. Waller, his earliest spiritual influences. After graduating from Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Dr. Waller continued on to the Ohio University in Athens where, in 1987, he was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business. Dr. Waller has earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky (1990) and a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Ministry to Marriage and Family from Palmer Theological Seminary (formerly Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary) in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania (1998). In 2014, Dr. Waller received an honorary doctorate from Lincoln University.
Dr. Waller was licensed to the gospel ministry (1987) and ordained (1988) at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cleveland. He utilized his music and preaching gifts as Minister of Music at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Louisville, KY (1987-1990). In 1990, Dr. Waller accepted the call to the pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Donora (PA), where he remained until June 1994.
Ministry at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church
In July 1994, the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church called Dr. Waller to lead them as their Senior Pastor. God’s anointing on Dr. Waller’s pastorate has been evidenced with unprecedented spiritual and numerical growth. As a result of this growth, in July 2006, Enon became “one church in two locations.” Enon purchased 34 acres of land to construct a new church edifice, which includes a 5000-seat sanctuary, a chapel, a computer lab, dozens of classrooms and offices, and a Family Life Center for banquets, athletics and ministry events.
Today, Enon holds three weekend worship services, including live-streaming one service on the internet, to serve a congregation that has grown from under 300 to 15,000+ members. In addition to worship, the Word of God and prayer are central to Enon’s ministry. Dr. Waller teaches two weekly Bible studies at Enon and the “Hour of Power” lunch hour Bible study in Center City Philadelphia. Prayer opportunities include two prayer meetings each day at the church locations and a daily, early morning prayer-line led by Dr. Waller and the Prayer Ministry team. Dr. Waller draws on his love for people to shape God’s vision for Enon: “A Place Where People Encounter God.” With over 100 ministries that focus on discipleship, fellowship, missions & evangelism, and worship, Dr. Waller’s arms stretch wide to touch the needs of people who come to church and those who do not.
Additionally, Dr. Waller has a passion for the development of youth. Enon utilizes a majority of its land surrounding the church as a “big backyard” for young people to participate in various competitive teams, such as cheerleading, football, basketball, baseball, track and soccer. All of the sports teams and youth activities are open for any youth in the Philadelphia area to participate. Dr. Waller also created the Young Abrahams, a ministry that pairs young boys, age 7 to 12, with men who help them improve reading skills and develop the social skills necessary to become productive men in society. Among other youth-focused ministries, Dr. Waller provides direction to Enon’s Scholarship Ministry which, through the church offerings and donor participation, provides scholarships and stipends to scores of students each year. In 2016, Dr. Waller led the effort to provide over $150,000 in scholarships (plus two full-4 year scholarships to Arcadia University) to 55 students and $60,000 in stipends to 90 students.
Dr. Waller’s community outreach extends far beyond the walls of Enon. As a community activist and a voice for the underserved, his signature service work in 2016 (to present) is a men’s initiative to serve Philadelphia. Dr. Waller has gathered hundreds of men of various religious backgrounds and community affiliations to offer a visible presence, continued participation, and positive influence in the Philadelphia neighborhoods.
Enon has partnered with various sister churches on the mission field. Currently, Dr. Waller serves as the President of the Lott Carey Global Christian Missional Community, which extends the Christian witness around the world. Through prayer partnership, financial support, and technical assistance, Lott Carey works alongside indigenous communities to support ministries of evangelism, compassion, empowerment, and advocacy.
The heart of Dr. Waller’s ministry can be felt through his musical gift. As a songwriter, musician, and vocalist, he has shared the message of Christ’s love through song. Most recently, the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church Mass Choir and Pastor Waller established the Enon Music Group (EMG) record label and released, “Dr. Alyn E. Waller Presents Enon Tabernacle ‘The Experience’”, which has been nominated for three Stellar Awards in 2016/2017.
