The Richard Stewart Lifelong Learning Certificate in African American Lutheran History, Theology, & Praxis
This exciting new program features nine different presenters speaking to the various aspects of Lutheranism’s place in the story of African American Spiritual Formation as part of the narrative that shaped these United States and her territories.
In the Fall of 2024, the three presenters are:
Dr. James Thomas, author of A Rumor of Black Lutherans: The formation of Black Leadership in early American Lutheranism. Dr. Thomas will present “The Soil from Which We’ve Grown—History of African American Lutheranism in North America” on September 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th at 7 pm.
Dr. Richard Perry, Professor Emeritus of Church and Society and Urban Ministry; Director Emeritus, Urban Ministry Program will present “Justification by Faith and its Social Implications” on October 1st, 8th, 16th, and 22nd at 7 pm.
Brian Faulk, Independent Scholar, will present “Religious Thought & Culture from a Black Lutheran Perspective—James Baldwin & John Coltrane in November, dates to be announced.
Additional presentations will be offered in Winter, Spring, and Summer of 2025. All sessions will be online. The certificate offers a total of 40 continuing education credit hours with a total of 36 presentations.
